This 2-DVD portrait demonstration was completed on location at the North Port Art Center, North Port, Florida, USA on August 1st, 2008 during a weekly portrait class. During the course of the demonstration, artist and teacher, Ron Sanders, shows a common method for progressively building an oil painting through the following stages:

1.) composition
2.) drawing
3.) value
4.) color
5.) texture
6.) detail

During the demo, Ron discusses the reasons for this progression and its benefits, use of a temperature based palette, analysis of color by hue, value and chroma, color mixing, brush use, and paint application.

At the end of disc 2 is a selection of other works by the artist that give the viewer an idea of how the artist applies these techniques to a variety of subjects of various complexities from plein air landscapes to studio figurative paintings. This video was produced to introduce beginning to intermediate oil painters to an easy and systematic approach to painting that allows for seeing the whole, judging relationships, and making changes throughout the painting process.

Ron Sanders is a Signature Member of the Paint America Association and the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society and an Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America. The winner of numerous national and regional awards and honors, the artist's work hangs in private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Indiana State Museum Collection.
